Website Accessibility

Llama Digital has always placed particular emphasis on making sure websites comply with accessibility guidelines. We always argue the point that not only does this make sense from an ethical point of view, but it makes a lot of sense from a business standpoint. Websites built to follow the accessibility guidelines will:

  • be easier for all users
  • work better on a wider range of browsers and devices (e.g. different computers and mobile phones)
  • be easier to maintain
  • perform better with search engines

A large part of creating an accessible website is by applying the technical techniques that will make the website more widely usable: for example by screen readers, text readers, non-mouse enabled browsers etc.

Another very important aspect is the 'softer' side of accessibility. This is more about making the website easier to use and understand. It is helpful to incorporate multiple ways of accessing website content (e.g. clear menu structure, quick links boxes, search facility, 'call to action' panels, site map, 'next step' buttons). Also it helps to use clear and consistent language throughout that does not alienate or intimidate users. Working with Mind the Gap, who work with learning disabled actors, has helped us understand how content is received by people with learning disabilities.

Award Winning Website

Llama Digital's commitment to making sites accessible and usable was recognised with the award for the Best Information Website at the Yorkshire Internet Awards 2006, for the Red Tape website.
